it’s st. patrick’s day. the obligatory corned beef will be in the oven soon. i’ve made soda bread every year, but i finally got honest with myself and admitted i don’t really like it. think i will make this bread instead to go with supper tonight. (bread instead. i like the sound of that.)
read a great blog post this morning on the theology of hell (and its emphasis in evangelism) and the God of the Old Testament (wiping out nations? not sparing women or children? punishment by mutiliation? how can we reconcile that with the seemingly more loving God of the New Testament?). i love it when authors will go back to the original language a Scripture was written in, and consider context and culture when fleshing it out. love hermanuetics, love context. hate proof-texting. that kind of theology has done me no good.
the prayer of St. Patrick is lovely. so i’ll leave you with a portion of it:
I bind unto myself today
The strong name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
