…”Caring Is Creepy”, by the Shins. This is way beyond my remote concern…..

All of these sleepless nights have got me wanting to watch something completely silly. I need light fare. No heavy thinker-type movies, no complicated plot twists, just mindless entertainment that doesn’t require much from my fatigued brain. And I think I found it: My Big Redneck Wedding, on CMT, Friday nights. Love it. I haven’t laughed this hard since before I had Liam! Take whatever you think you know about ‘rednecks’, ‘hill folk’ (as Michael calls them), etc., multiply it by ten and cover it will tulle. I have this strange fascination with the hill-folk, and want to visit Appalachia (say, “ap-ah-LATCH-ah”), but this….this show takes it to a whole new level for me. Trellises strung with crushed beer cans (flanked by the confederate flag), bridal parties dressed in full camo (purchased at Wal-Mart, of course!), wedding cakes made to look like horse manure, and riding to the ceremony in a carriage drinking beer from a koozie….oh yeah. If you’re stuck at home on a Friday night (like I am for now), you gotta tune in!
I hate resolutions….because I always end up disappointed in myself! So I don’t make them. Well, I didn’t make them. This year, Michael & I resolved to make a couple of them to do together. We’re not good self-motivators, so we figured we have a better shot at completing something if we both go at it.
After a having tough week last week (all of us), Michael shared this thought with me yesterday: “Every day is a new chance at life…to get things right that were wrong in the days or years before.” I think it fits some of the ‘why’ to our resolutions, so here’s our 2008 short list:
1. Read the Bible together every night (the One Year Bible helps break this down into manageable chunks!). We both feel like our generation of believers doesn’t know the Scriptures half as well as the previous ones. It’s so good and refreshing and grounding to do, reading Scripture, but we’re both so bad at doing it consistently.
2. Read more books. We’re going to get our library cards this weekend – finally. Got a list a mile long of books we’d like to dig into (recommendations welcome!).
3. Exercise for 30 minutes most days. I’ve got a post-pregnancy Pilates DVD and hand weights; and Michael’s got some dumbells, balance ball & a punching bag. We may not lose loads of weight doing it this way at home (with limited cardio for now), but at least we’re moving.
Still working on my ‘word for the year’. Stay tuned.
Seeing as how we’ll be at home a lot this winter with a new baby, Michael & I’ve been having movie nights at home, thanks to our Blockbuster queue. We just watched “The Namesake” this weekend….what an intelligent and touching movie! You must see it. The intro and ending titles and soundtrack alone are beautiful enough, and the message of the movie is poignant.
Also worth checking out: “3:10 To Yuma”. Best western (ha!) we’ve seen in a loooong time. Good stuff. Christian Bale’s character was powerful. I haven’t watched a cowboy movie that I’ve thought about for a few hours after watching it. This one I did.
Sidenote: I LOVE historical biographies & documentaries. So when my friend, Caron, suggested I check out “The Shakers” by Ken Burns, I queued it up. Waiting for that one to arrive.
PS – to balance out all my movie/TV watching, I’ve been reading “The Kite Runner” (thanks, Evie!) when I’m nursing Liam in the middle of the night. (It helps me stay awake at 2 A.M.!) I’ve never been to Afghanistan, but reading this, I feel like I’m there. Beautiful novel dealing with guilt, grace & atonement.
Thinking about being at home a lot this winter with the kids. Ran across this psalm the other day and really liked it:
“Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in his ways.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your sons will be like olive shoots
around your table.
This is the man blessed
who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion
all the days of your life;
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,
and may you like to see your children’s children.
Peace be upon Israel.”
-Psalm 128

“like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth.”

He’s finally here! After 17 hours of labor, we are home and adjusting to life as a family of four. It’s crazy & serene all at once. I’m feeling great overall, Michael’s been a champ at picking up the domestic slack, Liam is an easy baby (so far) and Reese is getting used to the reality but dotes on her ‘baby brolla’. I got out of the house today for the first time since arriving home a week ago, and MAN did that feel good – like rejoining the present after spending a week on the Delorian.
We are loving our little man!
I just heard from the hospital, and tomorrow’s the day! We’ll be there at 7 AM for induction. If all goes well and everyone’s healthy, we could be home as soon as 24 hours after Liam is born. I’m sure I won’t sleep a wink tonight…
This mosaic below is a sneak preview of his nursery! Everything was silkscreened by our friends, Nate & Alicia Perry, with very little help from me (except picking out the fabric & colors!). I did get a little handy and made the mobile over his crib & the wall art. Gotta say that I really love the way the room turned out! Quite peaceful, a little regal & fairly modern. Too bad it’s a rental and I’m not motivated to paint the bland walls, but I’ll add a few framed photos later. You can also click on the Flickr badge on the sidebar to view the room close-up, if you’re into that.
